"Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God" (Romans 8:21)
EASTER MORNING.
When to the tomb men bore Him,
Leaving Him there,
The birds that He loved grieved for Him,
Mute with despair.
The lillies, His handiwork, shivered
Out in the sun,
The stars hid their faces, fearing
What man had done.
The raindrops wept at His stillness
Deep in the tomb,
And the winds were hushed as they circled
His quiet room.
When He arose in the dawning
Men did not know,
But the little birds saw Him, and caroled,
Loving Him so;
And the smallest buds of the lillies
Burst into bloom,
Watching Him folding the grave clothes,
Leaving the tomb!
"To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace" (Ephesians 1:6-7)
ACCEPTED IN THE BELOVED
I have hungered and thirsted after God
And the place of His abode,
So He broke my bonds and He set me free.
On the wings of the wind I rode,
Cleaving the cool blue realms of space,
Past planets and suns I pressed,
Till I came to the City whose lights gleamed far,
The end of my soul's long quest.
There God Himself was upon His throne;
The doorposts moved as He spoke,
The seraphim hid with their wings their eyes,
And the temple was filled with smoke;
And "Holy, Holy!" the angels sang.
(In my heart there was no good thing).
And "Holy, Holy!" the chant came back.
(I trembled, remembering).
Then my guilty soul cried, "Woe is me,
It were better that I were dead!"
But God leaned down from His throne and spoke,
"My child, hast thou not read,
"I behold thee robed in My righteousness,
And I cannot see thy sin
I gave My Son, and He gave His life
That thou mightest enter in!"
"He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled" (John 3:29)
IS THERE A STIRRING IN HEAVEN?
Is there a stirring in heaven?
Do those who have gone before
Gather in eager clusters,
Close by the golden door?
Are the beautiful mansions ready,
Built by the dear Lord's hand
For the Bride of His love, who has tarried
So long in a foreign land?
Are the wistful-eyed angels watching
At heaven's parapet,
Scanning the far horizons,
Grieving, "Not coming yet!
"Not coming yet; she tarries,
But hark how her prayers arise,
Pleading that He will call her,
And meet her in the skies.
"Ah, the Bridgroom's heart is eager
And tender toward His Bride;
And soon our eyes shall behold her
At last, at last by His side!
"Not long till the marriage supper
Of the Lamb whom we adore,
For there is a stirring in heaven
We never knew before!"
"And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those thing which were written in the books, according to their works" (Revelation 20:12)
THOSE WHO ARE LEFT BEHIND
Swiftly the shadows lengthen,
Hushed is my heart, and awed,
Poised for flight at His summons,
The call of the Son of God!
(What of the lost and the blind,
The ones who are left behind)?
I, who shall look on His beauty,
And hear His voice, tender and sweet;
They, who shall never see Him,
Save once, at His Judgment Seat
(Yet the Lord came to seek and to find
Those who are left behind).
Solemn these moments of waiting.
Lord, let me search my heart --
Have I given my last ounce of treasure
And strength - have I done my part?
(Grave their fate deep on my mind,
The ones who are left behind!)
"Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father" (1 Thessalonians 1:3)
WAITING FOR JESUS
Waiting for Jesus, Trusting His Word,
Simply believing His "Thus saith the Lord,"
Reading the signs that His coming is nigh,
Daily expecting our Lord from the sky.
Waiting for Jesus, working for Him;
Solemn our hearts as these last moments flee,
Bringing us nearer the day He will ask,
"Soul whom I bought, did you do aught for Me?"
Waiting for Jesus, dreaming of Him,
Forgetting our pain and the darkness of night,
Hushing our hearts as the moment draws near
When hope becomes rapture, and faith becomes sight!
Waiting for Jesus? Some glorious dawn
The terrors and shadows of night shall be gone,
Our pain be forgotten, our tears wiped away!
Come quickly, Lord Jesus, come quickly, we pray!
"We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts" (2 Peter 1:19)
WAITING
There is a strange hush in my soul,
A stirring in my heart,
A singing eagerness for flight,
As one who would depart,
And in the sentient, waiting air
A hint of brushing wings
I strain against my fetters and
The pull of earthly things.
There is a quickening sense of light,
Of dawns about to break,
As glory paints the morning sky
To bid the earth awake.
Come quickly, Lord, and break our bonds
At last, and set us free,
And soaring, we shall rise, and dwell
Forevermore with Thee!
"And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice" (1 Kings 19:12-12)
HE ANSWERED FROM MY HEART
I sought through a thousand dreams for Him,
I sent my spirit far,
Coursing the uttermost reaches of space,
Searching each separate star.
I sought Him in storm, and in lighning flash,
In earthquake and fire and flood;
I scaled the heights and I plumbed the depths
In my search for the living God.
Then wearied, I wept on my pillow at night,
And I prayed, "My Lord, if Thou art,
Unseen by men, may we hear Thy voice?"
And He answered me from my heart!
"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and low, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen" (Matthew 28:19-20)
THE VOICE OF ONE WHO WEPT
Today I heard the voice of one
Who wept in far-off lands
Because of sin and misery,
And begged with outstretched hands
For one small lamp to light his dark.
Now fain I would have slept,
So stopped my ears, but in my heart
That sobbing voice still wept.
And then I heard the voice of One
Who counted not the cost,
But left His ivory palaces
To seek and save the lost.
He said, "The sound of one who weeps
Is coming up to Me.
Dost thou forget that last command
Which I gave unto thee,
"To preach My word to all the world?" . . .
O bitter be our shame!
Still hopeless millions walk the earth
Who never heard His name,
And still the world spends lavishly
In every crowded mart,
And still the voice of him who wept
Is sobbing in my heart!
